There are three levels of charging for EVs, which are based on the voltage at which the energy is inputted into the vehicle:
Level 1: Uses a standard 120-volt household outlet and is the slowest option, adding up to 5 miles of range per hour. Level 1 chargers are inexpensive and don’t require installation.
Level 2: Uses a 240-volt outlet, like an electric dryer, and is much faster than Level 1. Level 2 chargers can add up to 25 miles of range per hour and are typically fast enough to fully charge an EV overnight. Level 2 chargers usually require an electrician for installation.
Level 3: Uses DC fast-charging and can add up to 80% charge in 30 minutes. Level 3 chargers operate at 400 or 800 volts and can have rates as high as 350 kW.
Home EV chargers are safer than charging an EV using a regular outlet because they have a dedicated connection to the meter box. This allows them to draw higher loads without tripping breakers or overloading the circuit.
EV charging installations must comply with local and state codes and regulations. An electrical certified contractor should be used to ensure a safe and code-compliant installation.
